Beefeater

Beefeater is the popular name for the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London, ceremonial guardians who are all former members of the armed forces and live within the Tower. The origin of the nickname is uncertain; the official title is Yeoman Warder.

In practice

To be appointed, a Yeoman Warder must have served at least 22 years in the armed forces and have an honourable record. They live with their families inside the Tower walls, guide visitors on the famous tours, and take part in ceremonies in their dark blue undress uniform, or the red and gold state dress on special occasions. Every night the Ceremony of the Keys, the locking of the Tower, is carried out by the Chief Yeoman Warder and an escort of soldiers, as it has been for centuries.

Why it matters to newcomers

A Yeoman Warder tour comes with a Tower of London ticket and is the best introduction to the building's history. Tickets to watch the Ceremony of the Keys are free but released in advance and go quickly. The gin brand borrowed the name; the warders came first.
